Jack Dejohnette nasceu num belo 9 de Agosto de 1942 em Chicago, Illinois, Estados Unidos.

É conhecido por ter sido um influente baterista, pianista e compositor tendo atravessado praticamente todas as fases do Jazz desde dos anos sesssenta tocando com (e só para citar uma ínfima parte) John Coltrane, Charles Loyd, Miles Davis, Keith Jarrett e Michael Brecker.

Filho único, começou a tocar piano aos 4 anos e foi nutrido por um tio radialista com álbuns de Billie Holiday e Duke Ellington. Já adolescente, cantou doo-wop (como os saudosos Platters) e tocou piano no estilo roqueiro de Fats Domino, mas enveredou pelo jazz por influência do pianista Ahmad Jamal e do seu baterista Vernel Fournier. A transição para a bateria surgiu naturalmente como uma forma de expressar energia, ter mais espontaneidade e improvisar de forma mais direta.

No início dos anos 60, ainda em Chicago, aproximou-se dos músicos que viriam a fundar a AACM (Association for the Advancement of Creative Musicians), absorvendo o espírito de experimentação e criatividade que marcaria decisivamente o seu percurso, antes de se estabelecer progressivamente em Nova Iorque.

Gravou como líder cerca de 40 álbuns e, como sideman, outros 200. Foi dos músicos que mais gravou com a ECM (Edition of Contemporary Music), a mítica editora de culto fundada em 1969 por Manfred Eicher em Munique.

No final dos anos 80, devido a uma tendinite, alterou a sua maneira de tocar, ajustando a postura e a forma de segurar as baquetas. Essa adaptação tornou o seu gesto mais económico e consciente, permitindo-lhe continuar a tocar com a mesma expressividade e maturidade musical.

Ao longo da sua carreira foi nomeado para 6 Grammys tendo vencido dois, um dos quais em 2009 para "Best New Age Album" com o "Peace Time" um álbum contemplativo para meditação e relaxamento numa única faixa de 62 minutos em que tudo toca, das percursões aos sintetizadores que se extendem a flautas e vozes.

Casado em segunda núpcias e com duas filhas vem a falecer a 26 de Outubro de 2025 em Nova Iorque com 83 anos, deixando-nos um legado luminoso: uma obra que atravessa gerações, uma visão musical que expandiu o jazz e uma energia criativa que continua a inspirar todos os que o escutam.

Jack DeJohnette was born on a beautiful August 9th, 1942, in Chicago, Illinois, USA.

He became known as an influential drummer, pianist, and composer, moving through almost every major phase of jazz since the 1960s. Over the decades, he played with many of the greatest musicians — including John Coltrane, Charles Lloyd, Miles Davis, Keith Jarrett, and Michael Brecker.

An only child, he started playing piano at the age of four and grew up surrounded by music, thanks to an uncle who worked in radio and brought home records by Billie Holiday and Duke Ellington. As a teenager, he sang doo-wop (like the Platters) and played piano in the rocking style of Fats Domino. But he eventually moved toward jazz, inspired by pianist Ahmad Jamal and his drummer Vernel Fournier. His transition to the drums came naturally, as a way to release energy, play with more spontaneity, and improvise more directly.

In the early 1960s, still in Chicago, he connected with the musicians who would later form the AACM (Association for the Advancement of Creative Musicians). Their spirit of experimentation and creativity deeply influenced him before he gradually moved to New York.

He recorded around 40 albums as a leader and about 200 as a sideman. He became one of the musicians most closely associated with ECM Records, the legendary label founded in 1969 by Manfred Eicher in Munich.
