Once Upon a Voice...

Ralph Towner, guitarist, composer and multi-instrumentalist, was born on March 1, 1940, in Chehalis, Washington, United States.

He is a central figure of the so-called “chamber jazz” and of the fusion between jazz, classical music, folk and world sonorities, with a very distinctive signature: a lyrical, almost “pianistic” phrasing, especially on classical guitar and 12-string guitar.

He grew up in a family environment that valued music and began early on the piano; he trained as a classically based pianist and also studied composition. Shortly after completing his degree in 1963, he moved to Vienna to study classical guitar with Karl Scheit, one of the great pedagogues of the Viennese school — a decisive step that gave him discipline, architecture and a refined sense of space and clarity in sound. From that foundation emerged a rare territory: intimate, sophisticated and at the same time adventurous, where each note seems to have air and silence around it.

In the late 1960s, having returned to the United States, he joined the Paul Winter Consort and, in 1970, founded the band Oregon (with Paul McCandless, Glen Moore and Collin Walcott), a pioneering group that paved the way for a “borderless” language, where improvisation and composition walk side by side.

In parallel, he built a long discography as a leader — especially with the ECM label, which documented much of his work — and left compositions that became references, such as “Icarus,” which we hear here, along with remarkable collaborations in the universe of contemporary jazz.

From the 1990s onward, he lived mainly in Italy, between Palermo and later Rome, the city where he passed away on January 18, 2026, at the age of 85 — leaving a legacy of discreet and profound beauty: chamber music with the heart of improvisation.

É uma figura central do chamado “chamber jazz” e da fusão entre jazz, música clássica, folk e sonoridades do mundo, com uma assinatura muito própria: um fraseado lírico, quase “pianístico”, sobretudo na guitarra clássica e na guitarra de 12 cordas.

Cresceu num ambiente familiar que valorizava a música e começou cedo no piano; formou-se como pianista de base clássica e estudou também composição. Logo após concluir o curso em 1963, mudou-se para Viena para estudar guitarra clássica com Karl Scheit, um dos grandes pedagogos da escola vienense — um passo decisivo que lhe deu disciplina, arquitetura e um sentido muito apurado de espaço e clareza no som. Dessa base nasceu um território raro: intimista, sofisticado e ao mesmo tempo aventureiro, onde cada nota parece ter ar e silêncio à volta.

No final dos anos 60 entretanto regressado aos Estados Unidos integrou o Paul Winter Consort e, em 1970, fundou a banda Oregon (com Paul McCandless, Glen Moore e Collin Walcott), um grupo pioneiro que abriu caminho para uma linguagem “sem fronteiras”, onde improvisação e composição caminham lado a lado.

Paralelamente, construiu uma longa discografia como líder — em especial com a editora ECM, que documentou grande parte da sua obra — e deixou composições que se tornaram referências, como “Icarus” que aqui ouvimos, além de colaborações marcantes no universo do jazz contemporâneo.

A partir dos anos 90, viveu sobretudo em Itália, entre Palermo e, mais tarde, Roma, cidade onde viria a falecer a 18 de janeiro de 2026, aos 85 anos — deixando um legado de beleza discreta e profunda: música de câmara com coração de improvisação.

Er gilt als eine zentrale Figur des sogenannten „Chamber Jazz“ und der Verbindung von Jazz, klassischer Musik, Folk und Klangwelten aus aller Welt, mit einer ganz eigenen Handschrift: einer lyrischen, beinahe „pianistischen“ Phrasierung, besonders auf der klassischen Gitarre und der 12-saitigen Gitarre.

Er wuchs in einem musikalisch geprägten Elternhaus auf und begann früh mit dem Klavier; er erhielt eine klassisch geprägte Ausbildung als Pianist und studierte zudem Komposition. Kurz nach seinem Abschluss im Jahr 1963 zog er nach Wien, um klassische Gitarre bei Karl Scheit zu studieren, einem der bedeutendsten Pädagogen der Wiener Schule — ein entscheidender Schritt, der ihm Disziplin, architektonisches Denken und ein feines Gespür für Raum und Klangklarheit vermittelte. Aus dieser Grundlage entstand ein seltenes Klangterritorium: intim, anspruchsvoll und zugleich abenteuerlich, in dem jede Note von Luft und Stille umgeben scheint.

Ende der 1960er-Jahre kehrte er in die USA zurück, schloss sich dem Paul Winter Consort an und gründete 1970 die Band Oregon (mit Paul McCandless, Glen Moore und Collin Walcott), eine Pioniergruppe, die einer „grenzenlosen“ Sprache den Weg bereitete, in der Improvisation und Komposition Seite an Seite stehen.

Parallel dazu baute er eine umfangreiche Diskografie als Bandleader auf — insbesondere beim Label ECM, das einen Großteil seines Werks dokumentierte — und hinterließ Kompositionen, die zu Referenzen wurden, wie etwa „Icarus“, das wir hier hören, sowie bedeutende Kooperationen im zeitgenössischen Jazz.
