Era uma Voz...

António Chainho, de seu nome completo António Dâmaso Chainho, nasceu a 27 de janeiro de 1938, em Santiago do Cacém, Setúbal, Portugal.

É reconhecido como um dos mais importantes guitarristas portugueses e um grande embaixador da guitarra portuguesa, tendo contribuído decisivamente para a projeção e valorização do instrumento em Portugal e no mundo.

Treze anos mais novo do que Carlos Paredes, recebeu influência musical de seus pais, a guitarra do pai e os fados de Amália, cantados pela mãe, que começou a trinar ainda no café da família em São Francisco da Serra. Serviu o país durante a Guerra Colonial em Moçambique onde se fazia sempre acompanhar da sua Guitarra iniciando a sua carreira em programas na Rádio Nampula.

Em Lisboa, após tocar ao vivo para a Emissora Nacional, começa a apresentar-se em diversas casas de fado, acompanhando grandes vozes como Carlos do Carmo e a sua mãe Lucília, Tony de Matos ou Frei Hermano da Câmara. Gradualmente, leva a guitarra portuguesa além-fronteiras, participando em palcos e festivais por todo o mundo e chegando mesmo a solar com a Orquestra Filarmónica de Londres.

Ao mesmo tempo, aprofunda a ligação musical ao universo da língua portuguesa, estreitando pontes com o Brasil — através de artistas como Jaques Morelenbaum, Gal Costa, Maria Bethânia, Adriana Calcanhotto ou Vanessa da Mata — e colaborando também com nomes marcantes da música portuguesa, como Marta Dias, Rui Veloso, Pedro Abrunhosa, Ana Bacalhau, Sara Tavares, José Cid ou Rão Kyao, entre muitos outros.

António Chainho também procurou renovar a tradição da guitarra portuguesa. No projeto “A Guitarra e Outras Mulheres”, colocou o instrumento em diálogo com diferentes vozes femininas e novas sonoridades. Mais tarde, criou a Casa do Fado e da Guitarra Portuguesa, dedicada à divulgação e ensino deste património musical.

Casado e com três filhos vem a falecer exactamente no dia do seu aniversário a 27 de Janeiro de 2026 com 88 anos em Alfragide, Lisboa, Portugal. António Chainho partiu, mas a sua guitarra continua a falar por ele. Em cada corda permanece a memória de uma vida inteira dedicada à música — e de um homem que levou o som da guitarra portuguesa muito para além das fronteiras do seu país-

Once upon a Voice...

António Chainho, whose full name was António Dâmaso Chainho, was born on January 27, 1938, in Santiago do Cacém, Setúbal, Portugal.

He is recognized as one of the most important Portuguese guitarists and a great ambassador of the Portuguese guitar, having played a decisive role in projecting and valuing the instrument both in Portugal and around the world.

Thirteen years younger than Carlos Paredes, he received musical influence from his parents — his father's guitar and the fados of Amália, sung by his mother. He began to trill and play while still in the family café in São Francisco da Serra. He served his country during the Colonial War in Mozambique, where he was always accompanied by his guitar, beginning his career on programs at Rádio Nampula.

In Lisbon, after performing live for Emissora Nacional, he began appearing in several fado houses, accompanying great voices such as Carlos do Carmo and his mother Lucília, Tony de Matos, and Frei Hermano da Câmara. Gradually, he took the Portuguese guitar beyond borders, performing on stages and festivals around the world and even appearing as a soloist with the London Philharmonic Orchestra.

At the same time, he deepened his musical connection with the Portuguese-speaking world, building bridges with Brazil through artists such as Jaques Morelenbaum, Gal Costa, Maria Bethânia, Adriana Calcanhotto and Vanessa da Mata. He also collaborated with important names in Portuguese music, including Marta Dias, Rui Veloso, Pedro Abrunhosa, Ana Bacalhau, Sara Tavares, José Cid and Rão Kyao, among many others.

António Chainho also sought to renew the tradition of the Portuguese guitar. In the project “The Guitar and Other Women”, he placed the instrument in dialogue with different female voices and new soundscapes. Later, he created the House of Fado and the Portuguese Guitar, dedicated to the promotion and teaching of this musical heritage.

Married and with three children, he passed away exactly on his birthday, January 27, 2026, at the age of 88 in Alfragide, Lisbon, Portugal.

António Chainho has departed, but his guitar continues to speak for him. In every string remains the memory of a lifetime devoted to music — and of a man who carried the sound of the Portuguese guitar far beyond the borders of his country.

António Chainho, mit vollem Namen António Dâmaso Chainho, wurde am 27. Januar 1938 in Santiago do Cacém, Setúbal, Portugal, geboren.

Er gilt als einer der bedeutendsten portugiesischen Gitarristen und als großer Botschafter der portugiesischen Gitarre. Er trug entscheidend dazu bei, dieses Instrument sowohl in Portugal als auch international bekannt zu machen und aufzuwerten.

Dreizehn Jahre jünger als Carlos Paredes, erhielt er seine musikalischen Einflüsse von seinen Eltern – die Gitarre seines Vaters und die Fados von Amália, gesungen von seiner Mutter. Seine ersten musikalischen Schritte machte er noch im Familiencafé in São Francisco da Serra. Während des Kolonialkriegs diente er in Mosambik, wo ihn seine Gitarre stets begleitete und wo er seine Karriere in Programmen von Rádio Nampula begann.

In Lissabon, nachdem er live für die Emissora Nacional gespielt hatte, begann er in verschiedenen Fadohäusern aufzutreten und begleitete große Stimmen wie Carlos do Carmo und seine Mutter Lucília, Tony de Matos sowie Frei Hermano da Câmara. Gleichzeitig vertiefte er seine musikalische Verbindung zur portugiesischsprachigen Welt und baute Brücken zu Brasilien, unter anderem mit Künstlern wie Jaques Morelenbaum, Gal Costa, Maria Bethânia, Adriana Calcanhotto und Vanessa da Mata. Ebenso arbeitete er mit bedeutenden Namen der portugiesischen Musik zusammen, darunter Marta Dias, Rui Veloso, Pedro Abrunhosa, Ana Bacalhau, Sara Tavares, José Cid und Rão Kyao, neben vielen anderen.

António Chainho versuchte auch, die Tradition der portugiesischen Gitarre zu erneuern. Im Projekt „A Guitarra e Outras Mulheres“ brachte er das Instrument in einen Dialog mit verschiedenen weiblichen Stimmen und neuen Klangwelten. Später gründete er das Haus des Fado und der Portugiesischen Gitarre, das der Verbreitung und dem Unterricht dieses musikalischen Erbes gewidmet ist.

Verheiratet und Vater von drei Kindern, verstarb er genau an seinem Geburtstag, dem 27. Januar 2026, im Alter von 88 Jahren in Alfragide, Lissabon, Portugal.
