António Manuel Fernandes, mais conhecido por Nanutu, nasceu em 1957, no bairro do Sambizanga, em Luanda, Angola e é uma das grandes referências do saxofone e da música instrumental angolana.

Começou a tocar ainda criança, na Casa dos Rapazes de Luanda. Primeiro bateria, depois clarinete e finalmente saxofone, instrumento que acabaria por marcar toda a sua vida. Antes de Nanutu, foi conhecido como Nandinho, alcunha que lhe terá sido dada pelo músico David Zé.

Passou por grupos históricos como o Aliança FAPLA-Povo, Os Merengues e Semba Tropical. Em 1991 mudou-se para Portugal e continuou a estudar música em Lisboa no Hot Club tendo estudado também na República Dominicana e Cuba. Ao longo da carreira cruzou o jazz com semba, kizomba, afrobeat e outras sonoridades africanas e latino-americanas.

Tocou e gravou com inúmeros artistas de diferentes países, entre eles Tito Paris, Cesária Évora, Bonga, Luís Represas, Martinho da Vila, Simone, Daniela Mercury, Salif Keifa, Sting e Pablo Milanés. O tema que ouvimos, “Cabinda a Cunene”, mostra bem o saxofone de Nanutu como uma voz própria, capaz de contar Angola sem precisar de palavras.

A solo deixou discos como Marés, Kizofado, Luandei, Bisa, Ximbika e Gato Vijú. Em 2025, foi condecorado pelo Presidente de Angola, João Lourenço, na classe Paz e Desenvolvimento, em reconhecimento pelo seu contributo para a cultura e para a música angolana.

6 Nanutu faleceu a 15 de Maio de 2026, aos 68 anos, deixando para trás quase cinco décadas de música. Mais do que acompanhar grandes vozes, fez do seu próprio saxofone uma delas...

Once Upon a Voice...

António Manuel Fernandes, better known as Nanutu, was born in 1957 in the Sambizanga neighbourhood of Luanda, Angola, and became one of the leading figures of Angolan saxophone and instrumental music.

He began playing music as a child at the Casa dos Rapazes de Luanda. First drums, then clarinet, and finally saxophone, the instrument that would come to define his entire life. Before becoming known as Nanutu, he was called Nandinho, a nickname reportedly given to him by musician David Zé.

He played with historic groups such as Aliança FAPLA-Povo, Os Merengues and Semba Tropical. In 1991, he moved to Portugal and continued his musical studies at the Hot Clube de Portugal in Lisbon, also studying in the Dominican Republic and Cuba. Throughout his career, he blended jazz with semba, kizomba, afrobeat and other African and Latin American sounds.

He played and recorded with numerous artists from different countries, including Tito Paris, Cesária Évora, Bonga, Luís Represas, Martinho da Vila, Simone, Daniela Mercury, Salif Keita, Sting and Pablo Milanés. The track we are listening to, “Cabinda a Cunene,” shows Nanutu’s saxophone as a voice in its own right, capable of telling the story of Angola without needing words.

As a solo artist, he released albums such as Marés, Kizofado, Luandei, Bisa, Ximbika and Gato Vijú. In 2025, he was decorated by the President of Angola, João Lourenço, in the Peace and Development category, in recognition of his contribution to Angolan culture and music.

Nanutu died on 15 May 2026, at the age of 68, leaving behind almost five decades of music. More than simply accompanying great voices, he turned his own saxophone into one of them...

Es war einmal eine Stimme...

António Manuel Fernandes, besser bekannt als Nanutu, wurde 1957 im Stadtteil Sambizanga in Luanda, Angola, geboren und wurde zu einer der bedeutendsten Persönlichkeiten des angolanischen Saxofons und der Instrumentalmusik.

Schon als Kind begann er in der Casa dos Rapazes de Luanda Musik zu machen. Zuerst spielte er Schlagzeug, dann Klarinette und schließlich Saxofon – das Instrument, das sein ganzes Leben prägen sollte. Bevor er unter dem Namen Nanutu bekannt wurde, nannte man ihn Nandinho, ein Spitzname, den ihm angeblich der Musiker David Zé gab.

Er spielte in historischen Gruppen wie Aliança FAPLA-Povo, Os Merengues und Semba Tropical. 1991 zog er nach Portugal und setzte seine musikalische Ausbildung am Hot Clube de Portugal in Lissabon fort. Außerdem studierte er in der Dominikanischen Republik und auf Kuba. Im Laufe seiner Karriere verband er Jazz mit Semba, Kizomba, Afrobeat sowie weiteren afrikanischen und lateinamerikanischen Klangwelten.

Er spielte und nahm mit zahlreichen Künstlerinnen und Künstlern aus verschiedenen Ländern auf, darunter Tito Paris, Cesária Évora, Bonga, Luís Represas, Martinho da Vila, Simone, Daniela Mercury, Salif Keita, Sting und Pablo Milanés. Das Stück, das wir gerade hören, „Cabinda a Cunene“, zeigt Nanutus Saxofon als eine ganz eigene Stimme – eine Stimme, die Angola erzählen kann, ganz ohne Worte.

Als Solokünstler veröffentlichte er Alben wie Marés, Kizofado, Luandei, Bisa, Ximbika und Gato Vijú. Im Jahr 2025 wurde er vom angolanischen Präsidenten João Lourenço in der Kategorie Frieden und Entwicklung ausgezeichnet – als Anerkennung für seinen Beitrag zur angolanischen Kultur und Musik.
