Zakir Hussain Allarakha Qureshi, known as Zakir Hussain, was born on March 3, 1951, in Bombay, Maharashtra, India.
A tabla virtuoso and composer, he brought classical Indian percussion to a global audience through both his mastery and his innovative collaborations in jazz, rock, and world music.
The son of legendary tabla master Ustad Alla Rakha, who played alongside Ravi Shankar, he was a child prodigy. He began performing at the age of seven and touring professionally by the age of twelve.
In 1970, at 19 years old, he was invited to play and teach in California, a fertile ground for musical fusions like psychedelic rock and jazz fusion. It was the perfect laboratory for collaborations with John McLaughlin (Shakti), Mickey Hart (Grateful Dead), and BƩla Fleck. He also performed with Herbie Hancock, Charles Lloyd, Santana, George Harrison, and Van Morrison, among many others.
He won five Grammy Awards, three of them in a single nightā315 days before he physically left us on December 15, 2024, in San Francisco, at the age of 73. However, the sound of his tabla will echo forever, transcending time, borders, and styles. š¶
